Being in the position of “Business Manager” isn’t a simple job.  You are responsible for many different aspects of that particular company.  You have the ability to boost or burn the success of the business with your skills (or lack thereof) as a leader.  You must make sure that you are a well-rounded recipient of the position before you ever allow yourself to accept such responsibility.

Make sure to complete your to-do list daily

You need structure to complete tasks in a workable amount of time.  Set up a company to-do list each day, and finish it.  Don’t set your goals so high that they’re ridiculous, but push yourself beyond your comfort zone.  This will keep you ahead of your competitors.  Making these goals and lists will also provide a physical and visual affirmation of all the hard work that was put into completing those goals.  This way, you and your employees have a tangible measurement of your success as a team.  

Appreciate the loyalty of your employees

You have to treat your employees with respect and care.  They are your partners, not your subordinates.  If you treat them with respect, and reward their hard work, they will never leave you.  Seasoned employees are like gold in the business world, so hold onto your best compadres.  Make sure that time spent with your company is profitable to those who choose to stick it out.  They should know that their efforts are appreciated, and appreciation works wonders for productivity.  

Learn to communicate effectively

Effective communication skills will benefit you in every part of your life.  If you think you may be lacking in this area, it is extremely profitable for you to invest some time in learning.  It’s worth it.  Your employees will respond with more positivity, and your business will work more smoothly overall within a short amount of time.  If you don’t believe it, try it.  Before you completely “go off” on an insubordinate employee, try and think of a way to make the experience constructive as opposed to destructive.  

Always remember that simple know-how is not enough

Always remember that just because you have a piece of paper that says you are qualified to fulfill the duties of your position does not necessarily mean that you are going to be good at what you do.   Experience is knowledge.  Always keep yourself opened and malleable to new information.  The learning doesn’t ever stop.
